Buckeye Tree

The Buckeye tree stands outside Lillis and was a gift to UO in 1958.  Story goes that the tree’s presence on campus is the result of a bet on who won that year’s Rose Bowl—Ohio or Oregon.  Unfortunately for the Ducks, the Ohio Buckeyes won that year, ensuring the Buckeye tree’s place on campus.

In 2015, The Ohio State and UO faced off in the National Championship. While the game itself was played in Texas, tensions were high on UO campus, and when the Buckeyes defeated the Ducks 42-20, the tree was placed under guard for three days to ensure that it was not damaged or cut down.
