The Leaning Fir

Located just outside the Collier House, and visible from the Fishbowl is a leaning fir tree.  While it is unknown who planted this tree, it is thought to have been planted by Mrs. Collier, one of the first female botanists in the country.  Legend has it that Mrs. Collier went out in her horse and buggy to collect seeds from different trees to be planted on Collier House grounds; this may be the only surviving tree on campus planted by Mrs. Collier.

Why does it lean?  Because it was planted near a big leaf maple (that has since been removed), so it grew lopsided!
